Excavation Support, Lehigh Valley Hospital Project
Jet Grouting
Jet grouted columns and micropiles were utilized to support existing buildings adjacent to excavation for new Tower Bed Building.
Project Overview:
Layne GeoConstruction was contracted by The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company to design and construct an excavation support system to provide support for the General Services and Anderson Building adjacent to the construction of a new 7-Story Hospital Bed Tower Building.

The building is underlain by residual soils overlying generally poor limestone bedrock. The top of rock varies from near ground surface to over 40 feet in depth. Over 140 jet grouted columns and 75 micropiles were utilized to support the existing buildings.

Due to the karstic conditions and the potential for future sinkhole development, a grouting program was part of the work which included a combination of deep and shallow limited mobility grout holes.

Layne GeoConstruction drilled over 477 holes averaging 32 feet in depth, with depths ranging from 20 to 68 feet. Over 700 cubic yards of low mobility grout was placed.
