Jet Grouting |
|
Jet grouted columns provide soil stabilization and groundwater control for large
micro-tunneling operation in a high profile area of downtown Honolulu.

|
Project Overview: |
|
Work was undertaken in a high profile area of downtown Honolulu. Jet grouting was performed along the
alignment of the replacement sewer prior to pipeline installation by micro-tunnelling. A continuous
row of interconnected columns was installed below the pipeline to support the pipe and improve weak
ground conditions due to the presence of loose volcanic deposits. Jet grouted foundation elements were
installed to depths of 4 to 25 meters. Column structural capacity was greater than 80 tons; columns
ranged in diameter from 1 to 3 meters. Jet grouted columns were installed within urban fill, organics,
lagoonal and volcanic ash and sand deposits to transfer pipe loads to the underlying competent coral
formation.
Jet grouting was also completed at manholes, and receiving and jacking pits to provide support to existing
utilities and the surrounding ground, as well as for groundwater control during construction. A system of
patented, reinforced jet grouted columns was used to provide excavation support in areas where critical
existing utilities passed through proposed pit locations.
