High Mobility Grouting, Lake Vega Dam Repairs
High Mobility Grouting
Drilling and grouting in the spillway and south abutment of Lake Vega Dam.
Project Overview:
Layne GeoConstruction installed a 1,700 foot long, double line grout curtain to reduce seepage through the dam utilizing the Layne’s GeoGrout computer grouting system and six balanced, stable multi-component grout mix designs. The work was completed for MWH Constructors who were under contract to and overseen by the Louisville District of the USACOE. The best value, trade-off source selection evaluation process was utilized in awarding the contract.

The scope of work included over 44,000 feet of overburden and rock drilling; grouting of 766 holes with depths between 35 and 83 feet; and over 800 hours of grout placement. Layne proposed and completed low-mobility grouting as a change to the specified program in the spillway to seal significant solution features not treatable with high-mobility grouts.

Layne self-performed all of the drilling work, which required sonic drilling through the overburden and rotary percussion method with water flush through the rock.

Lake Vega Reservoir was constructed in 1942 to supply the entire Depot with water and will be the primary water supply for the anticipated chemical demilitarization operations at BGAD.
