High Mobility Grouting

Drilling and grouting along the inner periphery of the RCC dam.

|
Project Overview: |
|
The Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir is a pump storage generation facility owned and operated by AmerenUE. The
original reservoir, built in 1963 as a concrete faced rock-fill dike, collapsed on December 14, 2005
releasing over 1.5 billion gallons of water down the mountain. The new reservoir being built will be the
largest RCC Dam ever constructed in the United States.
Layne is installing a 6,700 foot single-line (in some areas double) grout curtain with depths ranging from
60 ft to 95 ft around the inner periphery of the dam. The drilling and grouting operations are being
performed in bedrock beneath the RCC dam. The underlying bedrock consists of fractured rhyolite with deep
weathering features, intrusive granites and weathered diorite dikes.
State of the art grouting software based on the Grout Intensity Number (GIN) method was specifically designed
for this project and was used for monitoring and recording of grout volumes and pressures in real-time during
each grouting operation.
