Jet Grouting
Jet grouting provides soil stabilization and seepage barrier adjacent to concrete sheet pile bulkhead.
Project Overview:
Layne GeoConstruction designed and constructed a system of jet grout columns for soil stabilization to provide a seepage barrier along an existing concrete sheet pile bulkhead at the naval base in Norfolk, Virginia. The pier, which is used to dock aircraft carriers, was experiencing soil subsidence and sink holes as sand fills were passing through joints in the sheet piling. As the sheet piling was deemed to be structurally sound, only soil stabilization was necessary.

A total of 126 jet grouted columns were installed at various locations along the pier. Pairs of 3-feet diameter single-fluid jet grout columns were installed through loose to medium dense sands at bulkhead joints identified during dive surveys. The column depths ranged from 15 to 35 feet in depth.
