Drilled Micropiles
Micropiles are installed to support a Selective Catalytic Reduction Unit for the Tennessee Valley Authority.
Project Overview:
Layne GeoConstruction designed and installed 102 micropiles for support of a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) unit at the Colbert Fossil Plant in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Layne workforces mobilized seven days after award of the contract, and completed two pile load tests on sacrificial test piles, along with 102 permanent rock micropiles in fifteen working days. Layne worked for 15 consecutive days, eight of which were over 24-hour periods, in very severe weather conditions to meet the aggressive schedule for the SCR foundation installation.

The drilled micropiles were installed to an average depth of 54 feet which included a bond zone of 20 feet in competent limestone bedrock. The total installed footage was 5,527 linear feet. Design loads for the piles was 240-kips compression, 150-kips tension and l0-kips lateral.
